Today I read about San Ysidro border facility getting a major overhaul, $557 million expansion awaits worlds busiest land crossing. Long lines and lengthy waits have become an inescapable burden for tens of thousands of cross border commuters at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Proposing to dramatically decrease crossing times for both vehicles, and pedestrians, authorities Thursday formally launched a $557 million expansion and modernization of the world’s busiest land-border crossing. Wait times during peak hours can currently stretch to more than two hours, and a 2009 study by the U.S General Services Administration showed that if nothing is done, those waits could stretch to 10 hours by 2030. Planned for completion by the 2016, the new facility would reduce maximum waits to 30 minutes, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The need for a new facility is clear.
On today’s newspaper I read how on Thursday authorities said how the killing of U.S immigration agent in Mexico last week elicited a forceful and coordinated response from law enforcement as thousands of officers raided suspected from Drug trafficking organization, in cites through Latin American and the United States. Eight people were arrested in San Diego and Spring Valley since Wednesday are among more than 500 people taken into custody in raids in cities that include Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Miami, St’ Louis, San Antonio, and Newark N.J. Four of them were arrested on suspicion of various drug-related charges and booked into court jails. Mexican authorities have arrested one person in connection with the attack, which is believed to be the work of members of Mexico's Zetas Gang. Former Mexican special forces soldiers are among its members.” We are basically going out to disrupt narcotics distribution here in the United States no matter what cartel their allegiance is to.” said Carl Pike, assistant special agent in charge of the DEA’S special operation division.

In today’s reading I read about , Libya. Last week, Libyan dissident Najla Abdurrahman begged western media to pay attention to the bloodbath unfolding in her country. "If the Libyan protesters are ignored," she wrote, "the fear is that [Libyan dictator Muammar] Qaddafi— a man who appears to care little what the rest of the world thinks of him—will be able to seal the country off from foreign observers, and ruthlessly crush any uprising before it even has a chance to begin.“

Libya’s oil industry has been in the spotlight over the past couple of weeks for numerous reasons most notably, its role in transfer of the Lockerbie bomber, and for the tough new conditions that have been placed on foreign oil companies operating there particularly, requiring foreign joint ventures to appoint a Libyan chief executive. Then China’s CNPC this week confirmed it would not be buying vernex , a small Canadian company with interests in Libya, after the Libyan government blocked its bid. And the drama doesn’t end there: it’s also been confirmed that Shokri Ghanem, Libya’s oil minister, will be standing down.
The United States has frozen at least $30 billion in Libyan government assets, a U.S. Treasury official announced Monday one of a series of steps being taken by international leaders designed to break strongman Moammar Gadhafi's grip on power.

Today I read about , There’s an old rule in politics: Know your audience. President Obama clearly had that in mind today when he had the nation’s governors to the White House. Republicans hold 29 governorships, and at least a few of them have 2012 presidential aspirations. So the joke about making yourself at home – but not too at home – was a good way to break the ice, before the president stirred the debate about dealing with public employees unions and then made a significant policy announcement on health care. The president says he will support speeding up by three years the window for states to opt out of the federal health care law, but only if they have their own plan to cover most of their citizens. On the one hand, it is proof the president has to give ground now that the GOP controls the House and so many state capitals. But the move also gives the president new leverage to directly challenge his Republican critics to prove they have a better way to expand access

The $30 billion is the largest amount ever blocked under any sanctions program, according to David Cohen, the acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.
ASHLEY CARACOZA-- MONDAY-- Today I read about three adopted children who allegedly suffered burns and were forced to eat pet food lived in "inhumane conditions" and might never fully recover, an Oklahoma sheriff said Thursday. "They have been raised worse than dogs," Canadian County Sheriff Randall Edwards told CNN of the three malnourished juveniles, who are 9, 11 and 15. John Klutz, 50, and Sonja Klutz, 57, of Yukon, Oklahoma, are accused by the district attorney's office of three counts of child abuse and three counts of child neglect, authorities said. The complaint alleges the Kluths confined the 15-year-old boy to a plastic dog carrier for two months and deprived him of food. The couple, who surrendered Tuesday, were released on a bond of $9,000 each. A phone number for them was unlisted. Oklahoma couple accused of child neglect, abuse. Sheriff says "inhumane conditions" for children were horrific. Three juveniles suffered burns and beatings, authorities say Wisconsin agency says it is withholding adoption assistance payments.
Today I read about the last WWI veteran passing away. Frank Buckles was the last WWI veteran alive in the U.S. and passed away at the age of 110. Buckles was an ambulance driver for injured U.S. troops in Europe during WWI. Another assignment included being an escort for German prisoners of war, not knowing he would later become one during WWII. His death leaves only two verified surviving WWI veterans in the world, both of whom are British.

Discovery astronauts Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew are scheduled for a six-hour spacewalk outside the international space station Monday. The team prepared by holding a 14-hour "campout" in the station's Quest airlock. "The airlock's atmospheric pressure will be lowered to help purge nitrogen from Bowen and Drew's bloodstreams, protecting them from 'the bends' when they leave the airlock for the vacuum of space," a statement on NASA's website said. They will install a power extension cable, move a failed ammonia pump and perform other operations outside the shuttle during the spacewalk. Discovery started its 39th and final flight with a launch late Thursday afternoon from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.Originally scheduled for November, the shuttle's launch had been delayed to make repairs to the external tank's support beams. Astronauts spent Sunday moving items brought up on Discovery over to the space station. On Tuesday, day six of the mission, astronauts will work to attach a permanent module -- known as Leonardo -- to the station. The module will be home for experiments in fluid physics, materials science, biology, biotechnology and other subjects. The Discovery crew is headed by Steve Lindsey. Bowen, a late addition, became the first astronaut to fly consecutive missions after he was assigned to take the place of Tim Kopra when Kopra was injured last month in a bicycle accident, according to NASA. Prior to Thursday's launch, Discovery had spent 352 days in orbit, circling the Earth 5,628 times. It has also carried 246 crew members, more than any space vehicle in history. "In a way, it's ... sad to see the last flight," astronaut Steven Swanson said Thursday. "It's such a wonderful vehicle.“ The last scheduled launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour is set for April 19. It will be commanded by Mark Kelly, the husband of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who is recovering from being shot last month in Tucson, Arizona. The last shuttle mission will be Atlantis, tentatively scheduled to launch during the summer.

Today I read about, Thousands of Yemenis marched again Tuesday to demand the removal of Ali Abdullah Saleh as the embattled president blamed the United States and Israel for the unrest across the region. There is a control room working for the media and you know where it is -- in Tel Aviv," Saleh said live on state television. "These events are managed by the White House. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Saleh needs to look inward instead of lashing out."We've made clear to the leadership in Yemen, as we have to the leadership in other countries, that they need to focus on the political reforms that they need to implement to respond to the legitimate aspirations of their people," Carney told reporters.

Today I read about , Two additional suspects have surfaced in the fatal shooting of an American man on a lake that straddles the United States and Mexico last September, Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez told CNN . The suspects are known Mexican drug traffickers and "do come over to Zapata County (Texas) every once in awhile. We're waiting to try and grab them when they're here," he said. A factor hindering the investigation is that the shooting took place in Mexico. Mexican authorities have not publicly provided any new leads since the investigator on the case was found dead.

Today I read about how Afghans blame civilian deaths on NATO Strike. Coalition disputes probe findings, saying its video shows attack killed insurgents. Sixty five civilians, including 40 children were killed in a NATO assault on insurgents in eastern Afghanistan last month. According to findings of an Afghan government investigation released Sunday. Tribal leaders had alleged that dozens of civilians were killed in the operation in Kunar province, witch involved rocket and airstrikes, but NATO has not confirmed any civilian deaths. This attack inflamed tension between Afghan government and NATO forces, and both sides opened investigation. Civilian deaths have been increasing in these recent months as insurgents appear to become more indiscriminate in their targets, attacking banks, supermarkets and sporting events.

A Kansas church that attracted nationwide attention for its angry, anti-gay protests at the funerals of U.S. military members has won its appeal at the Supreme Court, an issue testing the competing constitutional rights of free speech and privacy. The justices, by an 8-1 vote, said Wednesday that members of Westboro Baptist Church had a right to promote what they call a broad-based message on public matters such as wars. The father of a fallen Marine had sued the small church, saying those protests amounted to targeted harassment and an intentional infliction of emotional distress. "Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and -- as it did here -- inflict great pain. On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority. At issue was a delicate test between the privacy rights of grieving families and the free speech rights of demonstrators, however disturbing and provocative their message. Several states have attempted to impose specific limits on when and where the church members can protest. The church, led by pastor Fred Phelps, believes God is punishing the United States for "the sin of homosexuality" through events including soldiers' deaths. Members have traveled the country shouting at grieving families at funerals and displaying such signs as "Thank God for dead soldiers," "God blew up the troops" and "AIDS cures fags."

Modern day pirates are real and they are very dangerous. Today's pirates don't wear big hats and striped shirts, swing a sword, or carry a parrot. A pirate is any person who uses a ship to attack and steal from another ship. Last week, a group of pirates killed four Americans off the coast of East Africa. The Americans were sailing in a narrow waterway between Somalia and Yemen called the Gulf of Aden, an area known to be a target for pirates. The U.S. Navy later captured the men responsible for the killings.

The U.S. Navy captured them, they said they weren't going to kill the hostages but when the U.S. fired they killed the hostages. The hostages were on a mission to give people and teach them things about the bible.

On today’s news papers I read about how now there is a Permanent Homeless center. Located in Downtown San Diego. The city committed $16 million to help the ones in need. They wanted to built this now to help the homeless go through the coldest months of the year. The city counsel voted unanimously Tuesday to support the 32.3 million project by funding half of the initiative with redevelopment tax dollars aimed at eliminating blight in downtown. The remaining cost will be covered by federal tax credits and $2 million from San Diego House Commission. The building will have 223 permanent and transitional beds for the region’s homeless population as well as medical, substance abuse and job-training services. It is schedule to open on December 2012. they plan to tent the house 220 people each night from November to March. City leaders say the new center will end the political battle, but some whho serve the homeless remain skeptical.
Today I read about how Tuesday as city leaders committed $16 million in local taxpayer money to a permanent facility in downtown. The future conversation of the former World Trade Center building into a one-stop shop to help and house the city’s neediest individuals certainly won’t end homelessness, but proponents call it a big step in that direction. Brian Maienschein, a former councilman who now serves as commissioner for Home Again, a nonprofit that aids the homeless, said that this will only help them that it will also help the community of San Diego. The annual struggle to find a suitable location in San Diego for an emergency homeless shelter during the year’s coldest months may have been resolved for good.

A woman testified Friday that the leader of a spiritual retreat dismissed her alert about the failing condition of a fellow participant in a 2009 "sweat lodge ritual," one of three people who eventually died after that event. Speaking in Yavapai County Superior Court in Camp Verde, Arizona, Laura Tucker said she twice the second time, doing so more loudly and urgently told James Arthur Ray she was worried about Lizbeth Marie Neuman, whom she had helped support, during a brief break in the ritual.
