Today I read about how San Diego will help lead state’s economic recovery, study says. Job growth in San Diego and Orange counties will help lead California into economic recovery, but the statewide growth rate will remain painfully slow according to a study released Tuesday by the economics group at Wells Fargo Securities. While California's economic performance is expected to improve a touch in 2011, the state will continue to perform somewhat below the national average. Anderson said San Diego has had a modest improvement in its job market over the past year outs[acing Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area with the addition of 3,300 workers in health care and 800 in professional, scientific and technical services, plus 4,100 temporary workers. The country managed to bring down its jobless rate by only 0.2 percentage points over the past year to 10.1 percent. The pace of growth is slowing, and further price declines are expected in the months ahead. San Diego’s economy could be damaged by expected cuts in Pentagon procurement spending, although it may benefit from Navy cutbacks, because ships may move here as operations are streamlined in other areas.

Today I read about an eight year old Nikki Hahn who said” it would be cool to be a child beauty queen. Although that thought lasted about five minutes. She realized how hard it was to deal with the tanning, the pounds of make up, the itchy dresses, && the pushy parents. The little girl came from Oceanside, she lampooned the world of child beauty pageants along Tom Hanks. This video received about 750,000 views on YouTube. The little girls mom couldn’t believe how the video went from 400,000 hit to 750,000 views. In the video Nikki plays Hanks’ daughter, Sophie

Today I read about , More than 40 people have been killed in clashes between soldiers and a rebel militia in Southern Sudan, an official there said Monday, disputing rebel claims they have killed many more government troops. His forces have been attacking villages and clashing with the Sudan People's Liberation Army, the military wing of the movement that governs Southern Sudan. People in the region voted overwhelmingly for independence from the north in a recent referendum, setting the stage for Southern Sudan to become a new country.

Today's current event was about A foreign born high school basketball player who was declared ineligible is going to court Wednesday arguing that he and his top ranked Miami team should be permitted to compete in the playoffs later this week. The Florida High School Athletic Association board on Tuesday ruled that senior guard Brian Delany. FHSAA spokesman Seth Polanski said that krop reported that it had not provided the proper paperwork on Delany's eligibility. Federal law prohibits school districts from asking about a student's immigration status. The FHSAA does require information on players' eligibility and residency. Three of the team's players are seeking a temporary injunction Wednesday afternoon in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, according to Baron.

A Texas man who served 17 years in prison for a rape he did not commit was formally declared innocent Friday after DNA tests ruled out his guilt, officials said . State officials had denied his request for a pardon, but Harris County District Attorney Patricia Lykos agreed to review his case after she took office in 2009. New DNA tests on the forensic evidence in the case came back February 22 and conclusively ruled out Rodriguez, now 50, her office has said. Another man, Manuel Beltran, is now serving a 60-year prison term in connection with the rape case. The DNA testing also confirmed that another man, now dead but long considered an alternative suspect, also assaulted the victim, who was 14 at the time.

San Diego Gas & Electric reported that power usage rose to 4,083 megawatts at 3:24 p.m., surpassing the previous record of 4,065 megawatts set on Sept. 10, 2004. A megawatt is sufficient to power about 650 typical homes. Weekend electricity usage is usually lower than weekday demand, The higher the moisture content in the air, the harder it is for the body to cool itself. People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

Today I read that California will not have a landmark law allowing recreational marijuana use, but the state's landmark global warming law will stay intact. In two closely watched contests, voters on Tuesday rejected a bid to make it legal for adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use and to grow small pot gardens, and also defeated an oil-industry attempt to gut the global warming law.

ASHLEY CARACOZA--MONDAY-- Today I read about strong winds, It really made Monday difficult for driving to many travelers in the far East County. The National Weather Service said that wind gusts reached 50 mph through the Campo area. Drivers of high-profile vehicles had to pulled over at the Golden Acorn Casino truck stop to wait for the winds to ease up. The winds were stronger through the mountain passes in the higher elevations, according to the NWS. According to the NWS, some winds could hit 60 to 70 mph around San Diego County. The wind advisory is set to expire late Monday night. Thick fog also led to poor visibility along Interstate 8 near Alpine, and scattered showers led to a slow and frustrating commute across the county.

Monday – Today I read about the reality of the enlarged slave trade that is active to this day. The number of people enslaved to this day goes from 12 million to 27 million. A great majority of these people are women and girls, being trafficked to pimps as prostitutes. They are forced to wake up early, only to be brutality raped and beaten. They are sold around the globe again and again and again. Many of these women and girls will die of HIV/AIDS, contracted by the rapists. One mother, who’s daughter was a victim, said “Today she [my daughter] is seven years old. She had been sold at four years old to a foreign pedophile. Today she has HIV/AIDS. She said “Mommy, when you go out; you tell the men please. A few minutes of their pleasure, they kill me. I don’t want to die.” Hearing that is the most awful thing, I hope soon they can rescue all these girls.

Aaron Thomas, 39, was under suicide watch Saturday with cameras focused on his cell and a guard outside when he was spotted, said New Haven, Connecticut, police spokesman Joe Avery. He also faces additional charges as a fugitive from justice in Virginia's Prince William County with charges of rape, abduction and the use of a firearm in a felony. “DNA was collected and subsequently matched by the Connecticut state forensic sciences lab confirming that Thomas was the East Coast rapist," Johnson said. It is believed that Libya only has a couple dozen helicopter, built 30 years ago. Aswell as unexperienced pilots.

ASHLEY CARACOZA-- TUESDAY-- Today I read about Seth Rice is a 2-year-old boy full of energy, curiosity and emotions. Watching him play with his toys, you don't notice any of the emotional toll that having a parent deploy can take on a little boy. Let alone having both parents deploy, for nearly seven months simultaneously. But that's what Seth's parents did, choosing to deploy to Afghanistan together, rather than have one stay home with Seth while the other deployed. That decision may be hard for some parents to fathom, but for the Rices it was the best option. "It was very difficult," Marine Staff Sgt. Jeff Rice said in an interview from Camp Leatherneck, where he and his wife are based.

Jeff Rice said in an interview from Camp Leatherneck, where he and his wife are based. "It took a lot of back-and-forth discussions," Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Chat Rice said. Part of what made the decision less difficult was Seth's age. "We were thinking that a 2-year-old wouldn't remember too much of us being gone than if we had to do it when he was 7, when he'd remember the whole thing," Jeff explained. Still, the day they left was hard for them. "It was a very difficult day. Just wanted to hold him, told him we loved him, and that we'd be home soon, even though he didn't understand that," Jeff said. Chat couldn't put it into words: "I don't think a mother could ever describe that feeling, leaving your son.“ The genesis of the idea came from previous deployments, when Chat would came back from the war zone and Jeff had to leave a few weeks later. "She deployed to Iraq in 2004 and then as soon as she came back I deployed to Iraq in 2005 shortly after. It was about two weeks that we got to hang out together. It was very hard, because you try to catch up in those two weeks."

A fire has killed seven children at a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania, authorities said. The children ages 7 months to 11 years died Tuesday night when the fire fully engulfed the Mennonite family's two-story house in Loysville, about 25 miles northwest of Harrisburg, Tom Pinkerton of the state police said. The parents were outside the house at the time of the fire. They survived, as did another child, he said. The fire sent shock waves through the central Pennsylvania community. The father was taking a nap in his milk truck after making a few stops along his delivery route, Pinkerton said. The mother was milking cows in the barn. "While mom's milking cows, her 3-year-old daughter comes running into the barn and the 3-year-old tells the mother that there's smoke inside the house," Pinkerton said. "Mom leaves the barn, comes running out, sees that the house appears to be on fire.“The children six girls and a boy were found dead inside the house.

Slavery still exists. Of that there isn’t much dispute, if any. But how widespread is what many experts call modern-day slavery? Estimates range from about 10 million to 30 million, according to policymakers, activists, journalists and scholars. The International Labour Organization, an agency of the United Nations that focuses on, among other things, labor rights, put the number at a “minimum estimate” of 12.3 million in a 2005 report. Kevin Bales, a sociologist who serves as a consultant to the United Nations and has authored several books about modern-day slavery, estimated the number was 27 million people in his book “Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy.” The book was published in 1999. There is yet another estimate. Siddharth Kara, a fellow on trafficking at Harvard University and also an author, recently told CNN that his calculations put the range between 24 million and 32 million. That number was current as of the end of 2006, he said. There are several reasons behind the variance in numbers, said Ben Skinner, who published a book about modern-day slavery – “A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-day Slavery.” “There are two big problems with the count,” Skinner, a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University, said during a telephone interview. “The first is that the people we are counting are, by definition, a hidden population. “The second problem is more of a theoretical one where the definitions are not in place. We don’t have a common definition still as to what slavery is.”

Mehmood didn't provide any statistics on civilian casualties and didn't say how the military collected its data on drone strikes, which were considerably lower than tallies kept by CNN and several other independent estimates. Based on a count by CNN, there have been been 205 U.S. drone strikes since 2008. In one city, Suzanne Mubarak Square has become Martyrs' Square. Ahmed Shafiq, named by Mubarak just days before the leader left the government, stepped down and made way for Essam Sharaf, a former transport minister, to take over. The move had the blessing of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is, in effect, running the country. The emergency laws are still in effect, but the military council has met other demands made by the anti-goverment protesters, among them a planned referendum on constitutional amendments, set to take place this month.

This event is the first real test we'll see for all of the various technologies we use to protect people in tsunamis. Some of them probably worked well, and others appear to have failed determining which will be part of the recovery effort.

Today I read about the 8.9-magnitude quake, with a depth of 15.2 miles, and devastating tsunami. The tsunami brought waves of nearly 7 feet to a harbor in Maui . That quake generated a 33-foot tsunami wave, and some scientists believe the quake may have triggered the eruption of Mount Fuji 49 days later.
Initial reports as the waves reached locations outside of Japan indicated no damage. The quake was the latest in a series around Japan this week.
Earlier in the week on Wednesday, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Honshu.

Today I read about Japan and its 8.9 shock earthquake and a 30 foot high
tsunami. Hundreds of people were dead and hundreds more missing. More than 30 aftershocks followed, with the strongest measuring 7.1.
Kyodo said the death toll is likely to surpass 1,000.
The news agency, citing Japan's defense forces, also said 60,000 to 70,000 people were being evacuated to shelters.

A tsunami warning extended across the Pacific to North and South America, where many other coastal regions were evacuated, but the alert was later lifted in most parts, including the Philippines, Australia and China. Strong waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, damaging dozens of coastal communities.A 10-m wave struck Sendai, deluging farmland and sweeping cars across the airport's runway. Fires broke out in the centre of the city. The quake was the fifth-largest in the world since 1900 and nearly 8,000 times stronger than the one which devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month, said scientists . Measured at 8.9 by the US Geological Survey, it struck at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) at a depth of about 24km. The tsunami rolled across the Pacific at 800km/h (500mph) - as fast as a jetliner - before hitting Hawaii and the US West Coast, but there were no reports of major damage from those regions.Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate coastal areas in the states of California, Oregon and Washington.

ASHLEY CARACOZA--FRIDAY-- Today I read about the tsunami that hit Japan and an earthquake as well. The tsunami unleashed Japan's biggest recorded earthquake and it slammed into its eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it carried away ships, cars and homes, and triggered widespread fires that burned out of control. Hours later, the waves washed ashore on Hawaii and the U.S. West coast, where evacuations were ordered from California to Washington but little damage was reported. The entire Pacific had been put on alert - including coastal areas of South America, Canada and Alaska - but waves were not as bad as expected. In northeastern Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed and pressure began building inside.

Today I read that the President Barack Obama took the stage and addressed the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Obama said there is a U.S. aircraft carrier in Japan and others on their way. They are working to account for all military personnel stationed there. U.S. embassy personnel in Tokyo have moved to another location, he said.

12:34 p.m. - Obama talked about the "added burden" of rising gas prices.

On oil: “Keep all options on the table when it comes to any supply disruptions.”
