Today I read about A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Sumatra island early Tuesday morning, damaging buildings and killing two people. The earthquake hit in the North Sumatra region of the island at 12:55 a.m. and was 110 km (68 miles) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. No tsunami warning was issued as the quake was deep underground and too far inland to generate one.

Today I read about an 11-hour standoff with a man who threatened to detonate an explosive device in a suburban Sydney, Australia, law office came to an end Tuesday night with the man being taken into custody. She was reunited with her family and was uninjured, though distressed. Police had cordoned off streets in the morning after the man barricaded himself in the legal office claiming to have a bomb. A worker inside the office said the man entered the building at about 9 a.m. accompanied by a girl who referred to the man as her father. After talking to a clerk, apparently in search of a specific person, the man began throwing items and claimed to have a bomb.

9/6/11Today I read about a deadly hail of bullets struck Syrian refugees as they tried to flee across the border to Turkey on Monday, killing one man and wounding another, the Turkish government said Tuesday."Yesterday there was a bunch of people trying to cross the border to Turkey," said a Turkish Foreign Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity according to diplomatic protocol. "While one of the groups tried to pass, there were shots fired from the Syrian side, I assume from the Syrian soldiers... two people were shot, one died on the Syrian side of the border, and (his body) was also carried with a wounded guy to the Turkish side. The description of the incident and the name of the victim were both confirmed by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Throughout the uprising and subsequent government crackdown in Syria, more than seventeen thousand Syrians have fled across the border to Turkey, according to statistics published by the Turkish disaster and management directorate. In the video, Fraiter said the attack on government forces in Maharda was retaliation, for a military operation against the village of Maarat Hirma and the killed of a political activist named Abdul Samad Issa.

Today I read about alaska's Cleveland Volcano could soon be leaking from its flanks if the lava inside continues to build up, officials at the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported. The observatory reported that the volcano's lava dome was 262 feet in diameter on August 30 and has now expanded to 394 feet. The presence of the lava dome increases the possibility of an explosive eruption, but does not necessarily indicate that one will occur," the observatory said. "Short-lived explosions could produce an ash cloud that exceeds 20,000 ft above sea level. The remote volcano is in the Aleutian Islands, about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Today’s reading was about Pete Huh, a 39-year-old high-tech entrepreneur who couldn't care less if the U.S. Postal Service closes its doors tomorrow. From a work perspective, it wouldn't make any difference at all, said Huh, a married father of two in Redondo Beach, California. I do everything electronically. The only thing I use snail mail for is government forms. Cycily Thomas, a 38-year-old federal contractor from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has a very different perspective.

A plane carrying a hockey team with international players, including some NHL veterans, crashed as it took off Wednesday afternoon from Russia's Yaroslavl airport, killing at least 43 people, Russian emergency officials said.

The Yak-42 aircraft was taking players for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl -- one of Russia's leading ice hockey teams -- to Minsk, the Belarusian capital, the Russian aviation authority told CNN.

Two of the 45 people aboard the plane, which included eight crew members, survived, a Russian Emergency Situations Ministry representative said. Eleven of those on the aircraft were foreigners, the ministry said.

Yaroslavl's regional governor, Sergei Vakhrukov, named the two survivors as Russian forward Alexander Galimov and flight crew member Alexander Sizov. Both are being treated in intensive care.

Thirty-five bodies have been recovered from the crash site so far, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said, and the search for those still missing continued into the night.

Many of the bodies were recovered from the Volga River after the plane crashed on its banks near the airport, the ministry said.

The Lokomotiv team, which was scheduled to play a match Thursday in the new Kontinental Hockey League, had a number of players with ties to the National Hockey League.

NHL.com cited Russia's Sov Sport website as confirming that the entire main roster of the team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl was on the plane, along with four players from the youth team.

The team's head coach, Brad McCrimmon, 52, who was born in Canada, previously played in the NHL and was an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, NHL.com said.

Others who played in the NHL included Karel Rachunek, 32, a Czech native; Ruslan Salei, 36, from Belarus; Karlis Skrastins, 37, from Latvia; Pavol Demitra, 36, from Slovakia; and Josef Vasicek, 30, from the Czech Republic.

Demitra was a former Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks center, RIA Novosti reported, while fellow center Vasicek was formerly with the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes. Salei previously played for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Colorado Avalanche and the Red Wings.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the crash "represents a catastrophic loss to the hockey world -- including the NHL family, which lost so many fathers, sons, teammates and friends who at one time excelled in our league. Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of all who perished."

Lou Lamoriello, president of the New Jersey Devils, paid tribute to Alexander Vasyunov, a forward who played for the club last season, as "an outstanding young man and a gifted athlete."

Rachunek also played for the Devils in 2007-08, Lamoriello said, adding: "Both were members of the Devils family."

The Russian Hockey Federation expressed "its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and relatives, fans and the entire hockey community" in a statement on its website.

A Kontinental Hockey League statement said: "We are only beginning to understand the impact of this tragedy affecting the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club on the friends we've lost and the international hockey community.

Today I read about the sensational Italian court case, with the American student Amanda Knox. Her dad said that prosecutors have “no case left”, after the Italian judge rejected a request for new DNA testing of evidence. Amanda’s dad hopes that by the end of this month, they will be able to bring Amanda and Rafael back home. The case may be closing soon, and Amanda may walk free. I think Amanda Knox is guilty in the death of her roomate.

Today I read about the generation of New York City kids, that grew up around the time of September 11. They learned to fear and lose loved ones to soon. One of the girls who lived this experience in grade school was Megan Schuster. Her dad, Timothy J. Hargrave, was vice president at Cantor Fitzgerald. He liked this girl since grade school, then later on married. Nicknamed T.J. to his brother and friends, and “T” to his wife. This 38-year-old-man died at the World Trade Center during September 11,2001. This company lost so many workers that day. About 658 to be exact. The family does not like to speak much about it, but they share their experience.

Today I read about gay men who have not had sex with another man in 12 months will be allowed to donate blood in parts of the UK for the first time since a ban was put in place in the 1980s in response to the spread of AIDS and HIV, the UK Department of Health announced Thursday. Scotland and Wales have said they will allow gay men to begin giving blood if they qualify under new rules beginning on November 7. "Currently, men who have ever had oral or anal sex with another man, even if a condom was used, are permanently excluded from blood donation in the UK," UK National Health Services Blood and Transport said on their website. "The change means that in future only men who have had anal or oral sex with another man in the past 12 months, with or without a condom, will be asked not to donate blood. Men whose last sexual contact with another man was more than 12 months ago will be able to donate, subject to meeting the other donor selection criteria. The decision follows a review of the ban by the Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO) who studied the latest details on relevant sexual contact in relation to the safety of donating blood and completed a full review of review of overall blood donor selection criteria that is related to sexual behavior. The committee looked at the risk of infection being transmitted in blood as well as improvements in testing donated blood for diseases before reaching their conclusion to change the guidelines. "The Blood Services are therefore required to follow deferral rules that estimate the statistical risk of certain groups based on behavior," they said. "We are sorry for any inadvertent offense this may cause."

Today I read about,At a family reunion of the direct evolutionary predecessors of our species, there would be a lot of arguing over whether Australopithecus sediba gets in the door. Australopithecus sediba is the name of an ancient species discovered in South Africa in 2008. Researchers now have substantial evidence, published in this week's edition of the journal Science, that Australopithecus sidebar could be a direct ancestor of the Homo genus, of which humans are a part (we are Homo sapiens). If that's true, it means our family tree may have to be redrawn, with Australopithecus sediba at the stem of the Homo line.

9-12-11 today I read about an unidentified man who asked his neighbor if he can help him sell some crack cocaine then later asked if he may dispose of a dead body in his neighbors trash can. The neighbors thought it was a joke until later when they saw the body upside down in their trash can . The man claimed he lured the victim to his house and then shot him in the head, the witnesses told police. They said he appeared to be "slightly mentally challenged" and told them the victim "beat up his baby's momma."The man admitted he shot the victim when questioned by detectives but said it was an accident. He also told police the victim brought the gun used in the crime, as well as the cocaine that was found on the premises.

Today I read about a man in Tacoma, Washington, who allegedly had asked his neighbors for permission to dump a dead body in their trash can. This man appeared in court Friday. According to a court document, this man is accused of committing murder with a firearm. Some of the witnesses in this case, said they heard fireworks about an hour before the man appeared at their house. The witnesses then said that the man went over to their house, and asked them to help him sell cocaine. Later he showed up again and asked them if they would allow him to throw away a dead body in their trash can. The family thought he was joking. However, later on they contacted police since they actually saw what seemed like a body in their trash can. The police did find a victim. So far the man has given a bunch of different versions to the event. My prediction is that his defense will plead guilty with reason of insanity.

The French nuclear safety agency also said there had been no radioactive leak. The explosion happened at a center for processing and decommissioning nuclear waste. The agency has sent inspectors to the site. The explosion took place in Marcoule, in southeastern France. The building housing the furnace was not structurally damaged by the explosion, an official at the plant said. Different activities take place at the large-scale site, including research by France's Center for Atomic Energy. Areva dismantles nuclear facilities at the site. There are no nuclear power plants in Marcoule . Weapons-grade plutonium was once produced at the site, one of the oldest nuclear facilities in the country, but France no longer produces plutonium.

Today I read about 16 'super-Earths' found outside solar system. It's not like aliens put up a welcome banner or anything, but scientists now have newly identified at least one planet that could potentially sustain life. The European Southern Observatory has just announced the discovery of more than 50 new exoplanets , including 16 super-Earths. One of these planets in particular could theoretically be home to life if conditions are right. It's called HD 85512 b, and scientists say it's about 3.6 times the mass of the Earth. This planet is about 35 light years from Earth. Its location with respect to its star suggests that this planet could have liquid water under certain circumstances. The discovery comes from High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher, or HARPS. HARPS is located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile, and is part of a telescope that's nearly 12 feet long.

Fattal, Bauer and a third hiker, Sarah Shourd, were seized on July 31, 2009, after apparently straying across an unmarked border between Iraq and Iran. Iranian authorities arrested them, claiming they were spies and had entered the country illegally. Shourd, who is now Bauer's fiancee, was released last year for medical reasons, although authorities said her case remains open.
