Today I read about A brown bear and her cub mauled a group of teenage boys deep in the Alaskan wilderness, forcing rescuers to scramble early Sunday to help the injured. Two of the teens, participating in a survival skills course, suffered life-threatening injuries, Alaska State Troopers said in a press release, and two had injuries that were labeled "serious, but non-life-threatening." Megan Peters, a spokeswoman for the state police, said those four are in critical condition, while three others had minor injuries or exposure-related issues.

Today I read about Nationwide outrage continued Monday in China over the government's response to a deadly bullet train collision last weekend, even as operations resumed on the affected high-speed rail lines.A bullet train was struck from behind Saturday night by another train near Wenzhou in eastern Zhejiang province, killing at least 38 people including two American citizens and injuring almost 200. The first train was forced to stop on the tracks due to a power outage and the impact caused six cars to derail, including four that fell from an elevated bridge. By the time the railway ministry held its first press conference more than 24 hours after the collision, the public had seen not just reports of passengers trapped inside dark trains or images of a mangled car dangling off the bridge but also bulldozers crushing mangled cars that had fallen to the ground and burying the wreckage on site. The massive investment and rapid construction have long raised public doubts on the new lines' safety and commercial viability. The skeptics' voices became louder after the former railway minister a champion of high-speed rail was sacked for corruption early this year.
Joicei- Monday I read Democratic and Republican congressional leaders unveiled new deficit reduction plans Monday as top officials scramble to bridge a cavernous partisan divide and raise the federal government's debt ceiling before an unprecedented -- and potentially devastating -- national default. Both plans provide a path to raise the debt ceiling through the end of 2012, but differ sharply in terms of their requirements for future congressional action and both tax and spending reform requirements.

Today I read about Amy Winehouse's death. Amy died on Saturday & it is unexplained how she died. She died at a young age of 27 very wealthy. It hasn't taken long for reporters to point out that Winehouse's death comes at the same age as those of Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Jimi Hendrix, all of whom remain iconic martyrs on the altar of self-destruction. Even those wishing to believe she could still escape such a fate tended to avert their gaze, especially in the last couple of years, from what seemed an inevitable collision.

The triple-digit heat wave that unrelentingly baked much of the eastern United States last week began to cool off over the weekend, but temperatures will remain sweltering Monday from Texas to Missouri. Excessive heat warnings and heat advisories are in effect for much of the central U.S. and Ohio Valley as well as the eastern Carolinas, the National Weather Service is reporting. Heat indexes for those areas will be between 110 and 115 degrees, the service says.

Kim Kardashian learned she has psoriasis in an episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” that aired Sunday.Alarmed after finding red, itchy patches on her legs, Kardashian heads to the dermatologist. Dr. Harold Lancer takes one look at the scaly rash and determines she has psoriasis, a common skin disease that causes skin to dry and form itchy spots. The severity of psoriasis depends on the person – some people can be covered in these patches; other cases can be associated with arthritis. For others, it’s just a small nuisance.“I cannot have psoriasis,” Kardashian tells her dermatologist on the show.Health.com: Living with the stigma of psoriasis. It turns out Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner also has psoriasis. It’s largely believed to be genetic and related to the immune system.“I’ve heard of it before, because my mom has always had it. She didn’t have red flaky dots all over,” Kardashian said.A type of white blood cell called a T cell fights off infections in the body. T cells attack healthy skin cells in a person with psoriasis, When the dead skin cells and white blood cells can't clear, they form rash. Researchers believe genetics and environmental factors may trigger the T cells.

The capital of Helmand province was transferred to local control last week. The boy was kidnapped Friday. The incident comes amid a recent wave of attacks on local officials who are considered anti-Taliban. Less than two weeks ago, Ahmed Wali Karzai, Karzai's half-brother and a provincial council chief in neighboring Kandahar, was killed in his home by a longtime bodyguard.
Today I read about a team of international scientists analyzing a quasar 12 billion light-years from Earth say there is water vapor in the object – which they call "a voraciously feeding black hole" – equivalent to 34 billion times the mass of our planet. They say it's the largest mass of water ever found. We not only detected water in the farthest reaches of the universe, but enough to fill Earth's oceans more than 100 trillion times," said Jason Glenn, an associate professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder, who was co-author of a study of the quasar. The discovery shows water was present in the early stages of the universe when it was 1.6 billion years old, researchers say. The big-bang theory puts the age of the universe at 13.6 billion years. In our galaxy, the Milky Way, there is 4,000 times less water than in the quasar, and it is spread over a few light-years, according to the study. But in the quasar, the water vapor is present over hundreds of light-years, they said. A light-year is about 6 trillion miles. The discovery was made using a spectrograph at the California Institute of Technology's telescope on the Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island and verified using a facility in California's Inyo Mountains.Besides the University of Colorado-Boulder and Caltech, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Japan's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, the Observatories of the Carnegie Institute of Science and the University of Pennsylvania participated in the research.

The restrictions, which require collectives to be set back 600 feet from residences, schools and other so-called sensitive areas and obliges operators to apply for an expensive permit, were approved in April. Opponents of the zoning and public safety ordinances who claim the laws limit them to only a few areas in the city collected enough valid signatures to force council members to put the issue on a ballot or repeal the relevant ordinances themselves

All were from northern California.

An investigation points to Acosta as the mastermind behind the March 2010 killing of three people connected with the U.S. Consulate in Juarez.

Today I read about the wife of powerful Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has given birth to twins in a Los Angeles hospital and returned to Mexico, according to a senior U.S. government official. Guzman is wanted by U.S. authorities for leading an operation that has allegedly trafficked hundreds of tons of cocaine into the U.S. over a 20-year period. For his efforts, his cartel has received several billion dollars, according to U.S. anti-drug officials. The Justice Department has issued a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. Guzman, who is believed to be 54, married 22-year-old beauty queen Emma Coronel in 2007. The source says officials were aware of Coronel's travels and the August 15 births but kept it secret until a Los Angeles Times story this week reported the news. Copies of the twin girls' birth certificates leave blank the space for "name of father," but the mother's name is listed as Emma Modesta Coronel, who was born in California on July 2, 1989, according to records with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Today I read about millions of BlackBerry users remained without service on Wednesday as a three-day outage spread to North America. BlackBerry subscribers in the Americas may be experiencing intermittent service delays this morning, Research in Motion, maker of BlackBerry smartphones. We will provide a further update as soon as more information is available. The service outage started on Monday with customers in the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Today I read about on Thursday were investigating a series of attacks the day before that left 14 people dead, including four people who were slain aboard an ambulance. Gunmen ambushed an ambulance that was transporting two dialysis patients to a hospital in Juarez. The driver of the ambulance and another person traveling with the group also died in the attack. Photos from the scene showed a dusty white ambulance with the passenger-side window shot out, blood smeared across the car door and bullet marks on the windshield. The ambulance traveled to Juarez from the city of Nuevo Casas Grande. Juarez, one of Mexico's most violent cities, shares a border with El Paso, Texas. The border city has become a symbol of the brutal realities of the nation's drug war, which has claimed about 43,000 lives since President Felipe Calderon declared a crackdown on cartels in December 2006.
today i read Oakland City Hall was set to reopen Monday after municipal employees worked to clean up damage they said was caused over the weekend by Occupy protesters, about 400 of whom were arrested following clashes with police in this Northern California city.
The mass arrests, described by police as the largest in city history, appear to have injected new life into the Occupy movement as protesters in a number of American and European cities took to the streets Sunday to express their solidarity with the Occupy Oakland group.
"The Occupy movement will respond, as we have always responded: With an overwhelming show of collective resistance," Occupy Wall Street said in a statement posted on its website.
Windows broken, flags burned in Oakland City Hall
Occupy Oakland is part of a larger movement that began last year on New York's Wall Street and quickly spread across the globe. While the protesters have highlighted a number of causes, the overarching theme remained the same: populist anger over what activists portray as an out-of-touch corporate, financial and political elite.
